Upgrading Single Plunger Brake Elevators
This product brief outlines the requirements and options for upgrading existing single plunger brake elevators to comply with the upcoming retroactive NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) code provisions.
By January 1, 2027, all traction elevators with single plunger brakes must either be altered to dual-plunger type or comply with Unintended Car Movement Protection as specified by Section 2.19.2 of ASME A17.1.2013.
This upgrade work requires a NYC DOB permit and must be completed before the elevator can be placed back into service.
Please note that the specific choice of upgrade option will depend on the elevator’s current condition, budget, and other factors. Feel free to reach out to us for free consultation to determine the most suitable option for your elevator.
By following these steps, building owners can ensure compliance with the DOB code provisions and enhance the safety of their elevators.
